Down in the valley the sky seems far away. High up there it bends over our nice holliday region. But already at Altschweier, when the first hills and the gentle vineyards begin, the street is distinctly leading skywards, rising- first slowly the lower valley but soon forcefully through the upper valley - gaining more height until it winds in serpentines to the crest of the Black Forest. Again and again the treetops let You have a look at great panorames far over the Rhine valley to the neighbouring Alsace and to the Vosges in France.
What seemed high from down below, lies now tiny in the valley and further up at the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse we'll be a bit closer to reaching the sky.

Welcome to our village between the Rhine River, vineyards,
plum trees and the Black-Forest fir-trees.
It´s the home of famous red and white wines, such as
"Affentaler Spätburgunder" and "Sternenberg Riesling" .
Wine and other elixirs have a long tradition among us. On sunny hills the grapes for Riesling and Affentaler Spätburgunder are growing. This deep red, glowing Spätburgunder was already cultivated in the 12th century by cistercians nuns from rhe monastry Lichtental.
The legend says, that there once stood a chapel whose bell called for the daily "Ave Maria". This "Ave-Tal" became "Afenthal" and at last today "Affental". So You see, the name doesn't touch the  expression   "Affen" which meens monkeys, not at all.
Many of our hosts are wine growers at the same time. The grape harvest is highlight and completition of the vine grower's year.

Our plums are famous all over Germany.
We supply hundreds
of tons into the European Community.
Juicy strawberries, delicious cherries, aromatic plums, tasty apples, grapes, chestnuts and nuts - from the early summer until late in the autumn there is harvest-time.
The home of Bühl's early plums is Altschweier and it's surroundings. From here - in the second half of the 19th century - they made their way into the whole world.
Long gone are the times when women carried the fruits an baskets on their heads to the market at Bühl.
What's left is a delicious fruit, which is savoured fresh, on a cake, as jam or dessert or "spiritualized" as "Zwetschgenwasser".(plum liquor)
And even on the markets of northern Hanseatic towns, Bühler plums are a steady term of late summer.

The fruit farmers care also for another elixir. In their highly concentrated fruit-spirits the taste of the sun-spoilt fruits is caught.
That way plums, mirabelles, pears and co. are delicious in winter too.
Our delicious high spirited liquors such as "Schwarzwälder Kirschwasser" are
exported all over the world.

Crocus and Forsythia in the front garden on the sunny side give the start.
